สัญลักษณ์ของ GHS หรือ Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labelling of Chemicals กำหนดโดย องค์การสหประชาชาติ เป็นการติดฉลากสารเคมีเพื่อให้เป็นระบบเดียวกันทั่วโลก โดยมีจุดประสงค์หลักเพื่อส่งเสริมการปกป้องสุขภาพมนุษย์ และสิ่งแวดล้อมจาก อันตรายของสารเคมี ผ่านระบบที่เป็นมาตรฐานเดียวกัน

ระบบ GHS แบ่งประเภทความเป็นอันตรายเป็น 3 ด้าน ดังนี้

• ด้านกายภาพ 16 ประเภท
• ด้านสุขภาพ 10 ประเภท
• ด้านสิ่งแวดล้อม 2 ประเภท

Safety Data Sheet หรือเรียกอีกอย่างว่า SDS หรือภาษาไทยเรียกว่า เอกสารข้อมูลความปลอดภัย คือ เอกสารข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับอันตรายของผลิตภัณฑ์และคำแนะนำเกี่ยวกับข้อควรระวังด้านความปลอดภัยที่แสดงข้อมูลเฉพาะของสารเคมีแต่ละตัว เป็นเอกสารสำคัญในการสื่อสารความเป็นอันตรายของสารเคมีหรือผลิตภัณฑ์เคมีโดยให้ข้อมูลเฉพาะเกี่ยวกับข้อมูลทางกายภาพ ความเป็นอันตรายต่อสุขภาพอนามัย ความเป็นอันตรายต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม และ มาตรการเพื่อความปลอดภัยในการใช้การเก็บรักษา การขนส่ง การกำจัด และการจัดการอื่นๆ เพื่อให้การใช้งานและการจัดการสารเคมีเป็นไปอย่างถูกต้องปลอดภัย และ สามารถตอบโต้เหตุฉุกเฉินกรณีเกิดอุบัติเหตุ หรือเกิดการรั่วไหลได้อย่างถูกต้องและเหมาะสม โดยในเอกสาร ข้อมูลความปลอดภัยต้องประกอบไปด้วย 16 หัวข้อ ต่อไปนี้

1. ข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับสารเคมี และบริษัทผู้ผลิตและหรือจำหน่าย (Identification)
   • ข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับสารเคมี

   • การจำแนกความเป็นอันตรายของสารเคมีตามระบบ GHS
   • รูปสัญลักษณแสดงความเปนอันตรายตามระบบ GHS
3. ส่วนประกอบและข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับส่วนผสม (Composition/Information on ingredients)
4. มาตรการปฐมพยาบาล (First aid measures)
5. มาตรการผจญเพลิง (Fire fighting measures)
6. มาตรการจัดการเมื่อมีการหกรั่วไหลของสาร (Accidental release measures)
7. การจัดการและการจัดเก็บ (Handling and storage)
